Comfortable

Waste away the days with me
There's places that we've longed to see
But they can wait until we go outside
The taste of sulfur on my tongue
We'll see what the silence has brung
Maybe then we can no longer hide
Who we are and how we're feeling
A microcosm of the way we're being
I guess that I'm just scared
Of being comfortable in this
When I turn out the lights I don't see shadows
Just the ways you'll disapppear
If I could make it stop
Then you know I would, my dear
But until then I'll just hold on as tight as I can
The words repeating endlessly
I wish I could forget to see
The way things look when I turn on the light
Remind me of the way it was
I forget so easily because
Maybe I'm afraid of what I'll realize
In this world we've been concealing
A microcosm of the way we're being
History rhymes, I hate this poem
I've skipped to the ending so I know how it goes
And it seems wrong to me
Maybe that can change today
We could speak new words and say
something better than another happy ending
again

Darling, you're too mid-Atlantic
The bright red doors
You're firmly planted in the archway of your make-believe world
We're pretty far away from Philadelphia
And that's fine 'cause I'm really starting to hate you
And anyways I am looking to move
I keep confusing love and nostalgia
I don't ever want to leave California
Yes, I heard y'all got back together
The empties act as headstones, a grim reminder
On the avenue of the giants, the sun really cuts through
Unless you force your way in, I don't think about you
You always have your cake and eat it too
Have your cake and eat it too
I aspire to live in the present
But I look at bungalows and I calculate the rent
You stay angry, you tread water
'Cause you are only grown in stature
